Two Formats, Built for Coloring
Both sizes are proven coloring-book formats — the choice comes down to how the book will be used.
8.5" x 11"
Letter — the classic
The full-size format every kid recognizes from the store shelf. Big open areas for little hands, room for detailed scenes, and a generous canvas for adult-level line work. The default choice for classrooms, waiting rooms, and most self-published books.
8" x 8"
Square — the keepsake
A compact, gift-shaped format that feels more like a picture book than a workbook. Popular for party favors, stocking stuffers, and photo-based books where each page is a single subject rather than a busy scene.
Not sure which fits? Mention your use case in your quote request and we'll recommend one.
What Makes a Coloring Book Print Well?
A coloring book is a working document, not a display piece — it has to survive crayons, markers, and enthusiastic erasing. That changes what "good printing" means.
Uncoated paper, always. Coloring pages belong on uncoated stock, the kind with enough tooth for crayon wax and colored-pencil pigment to grip. Coated, glossy paper — the right call for photo books — makes crayons skate and markers smear and bleed. It's the single most common mistake in DIY coloring-book printing.
Crisp, solid black lines. Line art is unforgiving: any softness or banding in the black shows immediately. Professional production keeps outlines sharp at every line weight, from bold toddler outlines to fine adult detail.
Single-sided page layouts where it counts. Markers can shadow through to the reverse of a page. Good coloring-book design takes that into account, which is one of the things we look at during the proof review.
Final paper and binding specifics for your job are confirmed in your quote, so what you approve is exactly what gets printed.
Who We Print For
If it ends in a bound book of colorable pages, it's our kind of job.
Self-Publishers
You've drawn the book — mandalas, mazes, a children's story in line art. We handle the production side: file review, proof, professional print, and binding, from a single author copy to a launch run.
Artists & Illustrators
Turn a portfolio of line work into a sellable physical product. A printed coloring book is merch your audience uses for hours, not a print that sits in a drawer.
Businesses & Organizations
Branded activity books for waiting rooms, events, and giveaways. Schools, churches, and event planners ordering by the box should start with our bulk coloring books page.
Families & Gift-Givers
No artwork? No problem. Start from photos instead — our converter redraws them as coloring-book line art, and the book builder turns the pages into a printed keepsake.
Ordering 50+ copies for a school, church, or event? Head straight to bulk coloring books — including classroom sets and party favors.
Three Ways to Get a Book to Press
You don't have to use our creation tools to use our printing — but they're there if you need them.
Bring Print-Ready Artwork
You supply finished line art or a complete book layout. We review the files, flag anything that won't print cleanly, and send a proof for your approval before press.
Build It With Our AI Tools
Convert photos to line art and assemble them in the book builder. The output is a print-ready book without touching design software — one input path among several, not a requirement.
Mix Both
Combine your own illustrations with AI-converted photo pages — a cover you commissioned wrapped around pages of the actual birthday kid, for example.
New to the photo route? The photo to coloring book guide walks the whole journey, and the converter is free to try. Our custom coloring books page covers the conversion styles in depth.
From Files to Finished Books
Printing is quoted per job — quantity, page count, size, and finishing all shape the price, so you only ever pay for the run you actually need.
Request
Send your specs — quantity, page count, size — and your files or a link to your built book.
Quote
We price your exact job and spell out format, finishing, and timeline in writing.
Proof
You approve a proof of the final book. Nothing prints until you sign off.
Your books are produced by our professional print partner and shipped to you.
Coloring Book Printing FAQ
Can you print a coloring book I designed myself?+
Yes — that's a core part of what we do. Self-publishers, illustrators, and businesses send us finished artwork or complete layouts, we review the files for print readiness, and you approve a proof before anything goes to press.
What sizes do you print?+
Two formats: 8.5" x 11" letter, the classic full-size coloring book, and 8" x 8" square, a compact format that's popular for gifts and party favors. Your quote will confirm the options for your specific job.
What paper is used for coloring books?+
Coloring books print on uncoated paper stock — the kind crayons, colored pencils, and markers actually grip. Glossy coated stock looks great for photo books but causes crayons to slide and markers to smear, so it's the wrong choice for pages meant to be colored.
How much does coloring book printing cost?+
It depends on quantity, page count, size, and finishing, so printing is quoted per job. Single copies and small packs are available through our book builder's order flow, and runs of 50 or more copies go through a custom bulk quote.
Do I need design software to make a coloring book?+
No. If you don't have print-ready files, our AI tools can do the production work: the photo converter turns your pictures into line art and the book builder assembles pages into a finished book — no design software involved.
Who handles the actual printing?+
Custom Color is your seller of record, and production is handled by our professional print fulfillment partner. Format, binding, and timeline details for your job are confirmed in your quote before you commit.
